Editing note titles in Outline view

From v10.0.0, when editing a note name in outline view certain key inputs and input cursor positions offer additional features.

Note: focus must be in the view pane. Editing the selected note's title in the text pane does not invoke the behaviours below.

Delete key + input cursor at start of title

Note: here the delete key implies only backwards delete key, i.e. the backspace key (⌫). The forwards delete key (⌦) does not invoke this behaviour.

If the current input cursor position at the start of a note, delete merges the note with the preceding note in the outline. The title of this note is appended to its predecessor (space-padded), and its text ($Text) is appended to the text of its predecessor (adding a line break if necessary).

If there is no previous item in view, the note is deleted as normal (i.e. deleting when not in title edit mode).

If the insertion point at the start of the note and no title text is selected, the key functions normally.

If the forwards delete key (⌦) is used the character to the right of the insertion point is deleted. In this context, this is likely the first character of the existing title—i.e. not what was intended.

Return key + input cursor at neither start nor end of title

If the insertion point is neither at the start nor the end of the note, pressing Return (↩) splits the note in two:

The result is this feature is to leave the focus on the new note, but not in title edit mode.

Down-arrow key + input cursor at end of title

If the current selection is at the end of the title, down-arrow key (↓) completes the editing session, selects the next (visible) note in the outline, and puts its title in edit mode with the whole title selected.

If the down-arrow key (↓) is used either with a selection within the title or if the selection point is not at the start, the insertion point moves to the start of the title. A second press of the down-arrow key (↓) invokes the above behaviour.

Up-arrow key + input cursor at start of title

If the current selection is at the start of the title, up-arrow key (↑) completes the editing session, selects the previous (visible) note in the outline, and puts its title in edit mode with the whole title selected.

If the up-arrow key (↑ is used either with a selection within the title or if the selection point is not at the start, the insertion point moves to the start of the title. A second press of the up-arrow key (↑) invokes the above behaviour.
